How do Glue Dots Stand Up to Water?

“Do you think that this method would last a couple of days? How do they stand up to water?” in reference to our article, Glue Dots for Synthetic Nails, Fake Nails or Plastic Nails.

Answer

We have conducted a week long test with regards to your question and we are happy to share the results.

IMPORTANT: After applying SQOTS glue dots, I waited 4 hours before getting them wet (by submerging them in water)

I shake them very hard every now and then to see if they separate. After one week, the two nails are still very much attached to each other.

Are the Glue Dots Permanent?

“I need non permanent ones similar to those used by the banks when they send out the credit card to their customers on a letter. Thanks, Ted.”

Answer

SQOTS™ are ideal for application like attaching credit cards. It should be noted SQOTS™ do “eventually” become permanent. If exposed to UV light or direct sunlight (eg an application holding something onto a window) this process takes about 3 weeks. For other non light exposed applications, the process of becoming permanent can take many months or even years.

Printers – SQOTS™ Square glue dots are a simple way to attach to mail-outs and printed matter.

The toolbox and shed – SQOTS™ are a simple idea for holding drill or cut-out templates, holding brackets and hinges, aligning hardware prior to cutting or joining; even temporarily fixing rulers and guides. How about those loose drill-bits or ratchet sockets – they can be stuck onto card or into the boxes they come in.

SQOTS™ sticky dots work best on smooth surfaces. Removing items with SQOTS™ sticky dots applied can damage the surfaces you are removing the SQOTS™ from. There is a simple technique for removing items that are stuck with SQOTS™ sticky dots which will work in most cases. This technique involves shearing the two surfaces apart – for instance to remove a credit card from a mailout “cleanly”, you would attempt to slide the card along the letter until you felt the adhesive underneath stretch and give way.

Why are the SQOTS™ Square and Not Round?

Answer

Glue dots are not a new product and have been around for many years.  We set out to present the market with an improved product produced with a method we believe provides better control and results for the finished product.  The old style glue dots are produced with a very simple method of dripping hot melt adhesive onto a silicon release backing paper and then winding them up so that drop of glue is flattened.  The manufacturing result of the old glue dots is a squashed “blob” of adhesive that resembles a circle.

The patent pending manufacturing process involved the controlled “pipping” of adhesive through flattened pipes/manifolds at a controlled speed onto the silicon release backing paper.  The shape and the thickness of the SQOTS™ glue dots is controlled and determined with a process that does not rely on squashing the glue dot flat.  The result is that SQOTS™ glue dots have well defined thickness and straight edges; we control the length of the straight edge glue dots to form a square. The name SQOTS is derived from the first two letters of the word SQUARE and the last three letters of the word DOTS.

Our customers report they are very happy with the defined edges of the SQOTS™ and that it enables the Glue Dots to be aligned well with edges and corners of products they are sticking down with SQOTS™.  Printers who produce credit cards for mail-outs have reported the Square shape SQOTS™ results in less twisting movement/freedom of the Adhered credit card compared to the old type round glue dots.

I am having trouble removing SQOTS™ from kitchen laminate. Any tips?

Answer

IT SHOULD BE NOTED SQOTS™ CAN EVENTUALLY BECOME “PERMANENT” – Very-Hard; THOUGH THEY SHOULD REMAIN EASILY REMOVABLE FOR UP TO 3 WEEKS. The key indicator as to how easily the SQOTS™ can be removed will be how soft they feel.

The softness of the SQOTS™ will depend on two main factors; the time they are exposed to light, particularly UV light, and the porosity of the surfaces.

Remember that SQOTS™, when first applied, and for at least a few weeks should be easily removed by stretching a corner along the surface.  For example to remove a business card from a brochure, you would slide the business card along the surface of the brochure until you felt the SQOTS™ adhesive underneath stretch and give way.

Semi-Hard

With Semi-Hard SQOTS™ it will be possible to catch a corner of the SQOTS™ and perhaps stretch part of the SQOTS™ off before it breaks away leaving some of the SQOTS™ behind. Keep the part(s) that came away and, if available, gather two or three fresh SQOTS™ rolling them into a little ball that will help you to “grab” onto the semi-hard SQOTS™. With this growing ball of removed SQOTS™ adhesive you can keep dabbing and then stretching the remaining Semi-Hard SQOTS™.  Remember to do the stretching along the surface rather than trying to lift them up and away from the surface.

Very-Hard

With Very-Hard SQOTS™ it is very difficult or not possible to feel the SQOTS™ stretch at all.  You should be able to pick with some effort at the SQOTS™ but it will feel like your fingers feeling sticky.

We have found that in most cases – particularly when the SQOTS™  have been put on to a non-porous surface like glass or Perspex – you should be able to remove your “Permanent” SQOTS™.

In the end process you will be using some cooking oil.  Before using the cooking oil you need to make the residue SQOTS™ adhesive as thin as possible; the thinner you can make it the less rubbing with oil that will be required in the end.

Step One

Use a rag and water to “clean the SQOTS™.

Step Two

“Rip” away at the SQOTS™ with your fingers or a rag to remove as much of the thickness or mass of the SQOTS™.  There will still be a sticky, gooey residual left which will be taken care of in the next step. Note: If the SQOTS™ are on Glass you may be able to quickly use a glass scraper with a razor blade to “shave the thickness” of the SQOTS™; for safety reasons and possible scratching we do not recommend this.

Step Three

Use some cooking oil and rub, rub, rub. Before doing this step it is recommended you find an inconspicuous part of the surface and test your cooking oil to see that rubbing does not damage the surface.

Aside: Also in the video on the right hand column of test Perspex sheet, are similarly exposed strips of SQOTS™ tape that have peeled off leaving their residue.  The residue from the SQOTS™ tape is much thinner than SQOTS™ so Steps one and two are not required and it is a quick process.
